IELTS General vs IELTS Academic
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized language proficiency test that assesses whether non-native English speakers are ready to study or work in an English-speaking environment. Depending on their specific needs, candidates can choose between two versions of the IELTS: the Academic version and the General Training version.
The Academic version of the IELTS is designed for those who plan to pursue higher education or professional employment in an English-speaking country. The Academic Test includes components such as Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The Reading and Listening sections involve questions related to university studies, while the Speaking and Writing sections involve more complex language tasks.
Some professional organizations or licensing bodies may require individuals to pass the IELTS Academic test with a minimum score in order to become a member or get a license.
On the other hand, the General Training version of the IELTS is designed for those who plan to engage in non-academic training or employment programs in an English-speaking environment. This version tests language proficiency in various everyday situations such as completing job applications, taking part in conversations and writing letters.
The General Test also includes components such as Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. However, the Reading and Listening sections involve questions related to day-to-day life rather than academic topics. The Speaking and Writing sections also involve less complex language tasks compared to the Academic Test.
Both tests are scored from 1-9, with 9 being the highest score one can achieve in IELTS exam. While both tests measure English proficiency, the Academic Test is aimed at people looking to study or work in an English-speaking environment requiring a higher level of language proficiency compared to the General Test.
